Additional volumes of New Zealand sheepmeat and goatmeat products can be exported to the European Union at 0% duty under the terms of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiated by both New Zealand and European Union Parliaments. This access enters into force on 1 May 2024.

The access is in two separate quotas, namely:

  • fresh/chilled a pro rata of 4,433 tonnes in Year 1, increasing year on year in equal steps up to 13,300 tonnes in the 6th and subsequent years; and
  • frozen a pro rata of 8,233 tonnes in Year 1, increasing year on year in equal steps to 24,700 tonnes in the 6th and subsequent years.

Both TRQs are designated in carcase weight equivalent (c.w.e.) and so a multiplier (coefficient) is applied to boneless products.

Imports within both Tariff Rate Quotas (TRQs) are referred to as “in-quota” and are administered by the New Zealand Meat Board.

Product imported outside the quota is subject to variable out-of-quota tariff rates. This is administered by the EU and collected at point of entry.

The Quota Year runs from 1 January to 31 December. Access to these TRQs are available on a first come first served basis. This is done in accordance with the Quota Allowance Allocation System, which is being gazetted.

More details regarding specifics for administration of these TRQs will be published on this page in due course.
